Why choose GIP USA?
In this day and age of rapid globalisation where ‘no man is an island’, global exposure isn’t only something that will give you an edge up when finding employment in the future, it will also enrich your life and give you an eye-opening experience of life and culture in a country outside your own. And what better way to gain this international exposure than to go for an exchange program to the world’s largest and most influential economy, and the land of Hollywood, the United States of America!
GIP USA is a study programme where you will get to spend one semester studying at one of three top universities in the cities of Atlanta, Seattle or New York. They are, namely, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Washington and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute respectively. You will be able to take courses at the partner university which may be substituted for courses taught at NTU and earn academic units towards your NTU degree. What’s best is that these courses that you take overseas will be graded as pass/fail unlike if you take them in NTU!
You will be able to experience a whole new different culture and lifestyle, meet many new friends, experience the different seasons, and visit places you have seen so often in American movies and TV shows. Your time spent there will be filled with studying and interacting with the locals, eating great food, going on exciting road trips and just basically having the time of your life!

About USA
At 3.79 million square miles, and with about 306 million people, the United States is the third or fourth largest country by total area, and third largest by land area and by population. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries.[8] The U.S. economy is the largest national economy in the world, with an estimated 2008 gross domestic product (GDP) of US $14.3 trillion (23% of the world total based on nominal GDP).
English is the de facto national language, while Spanish, spoken by 12% of the population at home, is the second most common language and the most widely taught second language.
The US is a multi cultural nation, home to a wide variety of ethnic groups, traditions and values. The mainstream American culture is a Western culture largely derived from the traditions of European immigrants with influences from many other sources, such as influences brought by slaves from Africa. More recent immigration from Asia and especially Latin America has added to a cultural mix that has been described as both a homogenizing melting pot and a heterogeneous salad bowl in which immigrants and their descendants retain distinctive cultural characteristics.
The schools: Georgia Institute of Technology
Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the nation's top research universities, and is consistently ranked in U.S. News & World Report's top ten public universities in the United States. The College of Engineering is consistently ranked in the nation’s top five. It is also ranked first in the industrial engineering programme and No. 5 in both undergraduate and graduate engineering college.
Georgia Tech's campus occupies 400 acres in the heart of the city of Atlanta, where more than 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students receive a focused, technologically based education.
Students will learn from world-class lecturers and scholars working at the frontiers of science and technology.
The schools: University of Washington
Founded in 1861, the University of Washington is one of the oldest state-supported institutions of higher education on the West Coast and is one of the preeminent research universities in the world.
The University ranks 41 out of 130 Tier 1 National Universities (US News and World Report). It is a leading research university internationally recognized for its research programmes. Renowned for its entreprenuerial and innovative spirit, the university is also the place where NTU sends our Technopreneurship and Innovation Programmes students to pick up entreprenuerial skills. The university’s faculty is distinguished by the many honours its members have received, including five Nobel Prize winners in physics and medicine.
The schools: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
When you come to study at Rensselaer, you will benefit from a proud legacy of bold exploration. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was established in 1824 as the first technological university in the English-speaking world.
The Institute is especially well-known for its success in the transfer of technology from the laboratory to the marketplace so that new discoveries and inventions benefit human life, protect the environment and strengthen economic development. The popular business definition of “entrepreneurship” has been redefined and transcends traditional boundaries as a way of thinking and approaching challenges creatively.
Rensselaer is also widely recognised for the effectiveness of its hands-on approach to undergraduate education. Its classrooms are a model for intellectual engagement and the interaction of students and faculty.
What others have to say?
“Making GIP USA a part of my undergraduate experience has truly been one of the best decisions I have made as it is certainly a once in lifetime, enriching and eye-opening experience that I will keep with me for the rest of my life. I made many new international friends, visited many exciting places such as Key West in Florida, the Southernmost tip of continental USA, learnt to live independently and basically had the most exciting and memorable 5 months of my life so far! Step out and make the world your classroom too!”
- Josephine Chiang, Georgia Institute of Technology Spring ‘09
