India

Why GIP India?

india1.png

With its mind-bending diversity - from snow-capped mountains to sun-washed beaches, crusty old bazaars to chichi designer boutiques, tranquil temples to feisty festivals, ramshackle rural villages to techno-savvy urban hubs - it’s hardly surprising that India has been dubbed the planet’s most multidimensional country.

The subcontinent is home to more than a billion people, and its eclectic melange of ethnic groups translates into an intoxicating cultural cocktail. A cocktail that can blind foreigners to the economic might of India.

India is the 12th largest economy in the world but is now the second fastest growing major economy in the world. Its economic growth since 1980 has been among the most rapid and has been touted as the future motor for world economy. A Goldman Sachs report predicts that from 2007 to 2020, India’s GDP per capita will quadruple and that the Indian economy will surpass the United Kingdom by 2015 and the United States by 2043.[1] India is increasingly taking its place  on the global stage and in international forums as a 21st century superpower.

Being an increasing economic powerhouse, it is hardly surprising to notice the amount of investment pouring into India and the number of multi-national companies sprouting out around India.

To many, India has become the land of opportunities. Why not hop in and take a ride on this rampaging economic juggernaut?

Mumbai

Mumbai can be downright confronting and confounding for the first-time visitor. But don’t let petulant first impressions muddy the plus points of the city.

You will realise that Mumbai is a frantic concoction of India’s extremes. It is the country’s financial powerhouse and it is the vogue centre of fashion, film and after-dark frolics. Glistening skyscrapers and malls mushroom amid slums and grinding poverty. Cool air-conditioned chauffeured cars competing neck to neck with pollution infested auto-rickshaws in a race out of Mumbai traffic jams.

Only once the initial shell shock of Mumbai’s chaos subsides, can one start to appreciate the city’s allure: stand in awe at the grand colonial relics of British past; get lost in the labyrinth of Mumbai’s numerous bazaars; dine at some of the finest restaurants in the country, and work off the appetite gyrating at ultrachic bars alongside Bollywood wannabes.

Pune

A place where old and new India interweave without a second thought, Pune (pronounced Poo-na) is a thriving centre of academia and business. In India’s educational hub, walking in the city feels like walking in a large campus with many youths carrying a haversack with textbook in arm going about their daily college activities. The climate is relatively cooler than other places in India with its higher altitude.

Despite the pollution and clogged traffic that typically go with Indian cities, Pune is an interesting place to hang out and a great place to glimpse the much touted but sometimes hard to find “New India”

The TATA Group

The TATA Group comprises 96 operating companies in seven business sectors: Information Technology and Communications, Engineering, Materials, Services, Energy, Consumer Products and Chemicals. The Group was founded in the last quarter of the 19th century when India had just set out on the road to gaining independence from British rule. Consequently, the founders of the Group aligned business opportunities with nation building. This approach remains ingrained into the Group’s ethos even today even as it spreads its operations to other geographies.

The TATA Group is today India’s largest conglomerate with revenues equivalent to almost 3.2% of the nation’s GDP. The Group companies employ more than 300,000 people. Its 27 publicly listed companies have a combined market capitalisation which is the second highest among all business houses in India and a shareholder base of over 2.9 million. Group companies export products and services to over 85 countries and have operations in over 80 countries.

The TATA companies share a set of five core values derived from the Group’s early beliefs which even today drive all business decisions. These values are: Integrity, Understanding, Excellence, Unity and Responsibility. The Group and its companies have been distinctive in their adherence to business ethics and their commitment to corporate social responsibility. This legacy has earned the trust of the Group’s stakeholders in a measure few business houses can match.

Hear it from the TATA Interns

“My first steps into India felt like I had entered a cauldron of spices. The sights and sounds hit me, tantalising my five senses. I had expected it, after the numerous 'encouragements' from my friends and relatives, but it was one of the few experiences in life where the reality besieged any description you could ever make. Surprisingly, I smiled. This was it, this was the real world. And god was I lucky to have the TATAs as my guardian angel. My internship with TATA Chemicals Limited (TCL) proved to be the most fulfilling 6 months in my 3 year course. Where else in the world could you have the opportunity to market a product for 1.1billion users? Working directly under the product manager, I was exposed to various arms of the marketing field, supervising, liaising and working with various agencies. This was my dream internship, providing me with the experience and exposure I sorely needed. Furthermore, I believed that TCL was one of the few companies that encouraged their interns to take off to explore the various sights of India. Coupled with caring colleagues and attentive HR personnels, I believe TCL was instrumental in my awesome experience in incredible India.”

-Daryl Chee Jian Hao, Nanyang Business School, Year 3 -

“Working with the TATAs can be summarised in one word: Awesome. I had the fantastic opportunity to be a part of a team doing a nation-wide product launch. It was a very exciting phase where I not only watch the team built up the business foundation to make the product a success but l could also participate in it! I was tasked to take charge of the product packaging, supervise a market study, and participate in the execution of marketing strategies among many other challenging tasks.

Living in India has also opened up a whole new world of experience for me. From performing ‘kung-fu’ to board the Mumbai train to the light-hearted banter I had with colleagues over a delicious Vada-pav by the roadside stalls, it has been a truly unforgettable experience.  No doubt, living in India was tough and there were a few frustrating moments as I adapted to the Indian culture. However, even if I am given the power to rewind the clock, I will still select GIP India because the whole experience has been nothing short of magical.”

-Desmond Wong, School Mechanical and Production Engineering, Year 4-

Hear it from the Suzlon Interns

"Working in Suzlon has been a priceless opportunity because it was not only an eye-opener for me in terms of experiencing how the department functioned, but on a more personal level, it allowed me the opportunity to improve myself as an individual. I have forged numerous priceless friendships which I shall bring back to Singapore. This internship has allowed me to grow in terms of managing my time, my tasks, my project and ultimately the people around me. My 22 weeks here in Pune have undoubtedly been a challenging and tough one. It’s been a really really long road and it’s hard being so far apart from my family. Being in a foreign land, far away from everything familiar was really daunting at first, but with time, I eventually learnt to adapt. Perseverance, motivation and determination were key – it ensured that I held my head up high even during the darkest hours. This has been such an amazing opportunity which I will remember for the rest of my life."

-Muhammad Aadil Bin Dafir, School of Mechanical and Production Engineering, Year 4-

“Two thousand odd miles away, this land is of rich history, culture and of great diversities. It is indeed a totally different experience. Stepping out of our boundaries, I see, feel and appreciate every bit of the uniqueness and beauty of the way of life here. Everything about India and everyday in India give you many opportunities to learn if you accept India with an open heart and mind. At the end of this learning journey, I find myself falling in love with India and I'll never regret choosing GIP India.”

-Soh Xuan Ru, School of Economics, Year 4-

”Working for Suzlon Energy has shown me the possibilities of a green future. My project explored the possible strategies for penetrating emerging markets in the wind business and challenged me to come up with realistic and practical solutions. Being part of the International Business Unit, I got the opportunity to meet and interact with clients from all parts of the globe and learn about the energy issues they are facing in their countries. Alongside my core work duties, I worked on small projects to help enhance the work environment, from working on the department newsletter to co-organizing the department’s Team Building Workshop.

As a country, India is a land of contrasts and diversities: It is hot like the cup of Chai (Indian tea) you have for breakfast and cold like a rickshaw ride in winter. It gets really wet when the Monsoon winds start to blow but it stays dry in the deserts of Rajasthan. The people you meet will intrigue and fascinate you with their everyday stories and Indian hospitality is like no other. Being in India for 6 months has immersed me in a world unlike my own and has left me enriched with its culture and history.”

-Fahimah Thalib, Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Year 4-

“It is without doubt that my experience at Emerson was an eye-opening and enriching experience. Emerson Process Management India (EPMI) allowed me to gain hands-on experience during visits to project sites and in discussions with customers, on multi-million dollar projects. I was given the chance to contribute greatly to such company projects as I was allowed an active role in various aspects of these projects. I had the freedom to make critical decisions on my own, as well as the freedom to consult and have discussions with senior project managers and clients.

Students get to witness projects from their design stages to the execution and delivery stages. I had a fantastic time participating in company events such as team-building sessions and talentime competitions. There were also weekly sharing sessions on the industry, the Asian economy, mega projects and engineering technologies which provided me with even more opportunities to learn!”
